Streamlining the GivingTuesday Experience to Elevate First-Time Donors and Gifting

Founded by some of the first women to attend college in the United States, Kappa Alpha Theta (Theta) is a Greek organization focused on offering women lifelong opportunities for intellectual and personal growth. The organization currently boasts 141 college chapters across North America and more than 200 alumnae chapters and circles. 


Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation 一 which provides the members of Kappa Alpha Theta funding opportunities so they can embrace their ambition, reach their fullest potential, and make a difference in the world 一 needed a platform that could handle a high volume of activity for GivingTuesday, and also provide ease of use for staff. “With GivingTuesday, the full focus is on the Theta Forever Fund,” said the strategic giving director for Theta Foundation. The Theta Forever Fund supports educational and leadership opportunities for members, making the annual fundraising push on GivingTuesday essential for the organization.



Solution


To create an elevated and streamlined GivingTuesday experience for both donors and staff, Theta Foundation turned to ScaleFunder. The organization’s director of advancement and her team utilize the platform’s features heavily, citing the donor wall and heat map as particularly popular. They’ve also been able to utilize matches and challenges to incentivize and inspire donors. The customizable nature of the platform has been a bonus, allowing the team to create a GivingTuesday page aligned with the look and feel of the organization’s branding. 


Theta has also been working on revamping their ambassador program to supercharge their fundraising efforts, specifically seeking to enlist college students so they can push the campaign out to a larger overall network of potential donors (current chapter members, alumnae, and family and friends). Part of the extensive coaching the ambassadors receive is training on how to use ScaleFunder. In addition to furthering the organization’s fundraising goals, this ambassador training also helps to build a pipeline of future advancement professionals and, in accordance with Kappa Alpha Theta’s aim to exercise the widest influence for good, lifelong philanthropists who seek to create positive change in their communities.

Results

As a result of the foundation’s improved GivingTuesday strategy and platform, Kappa Alpha Theta received over 450 gifts and raised over $60,000. Key achievements from its new efforts included over 100 first-time donors and the largest average GivingTuesday gift to date for their foundation. 


Moving forward, Theta Foundation plans to continue highlighting the personal stories of both collegian members and alumnae alike, including an initiative called “Thankful for Theta.” This involves asking alumnae to share why they are thankful for Theta and how Theta has positively impacted their lives, then sharing these stories in the weeks leading up to GivingTuesday to prime prospective donors to give on the day. The team is also excited to see how their revamped ambassador program makes a difference on GivingTuesday this year. We are, too!
