Key Changes Coming to the ACT


ACT Test Will Be Shorter

ACT test-taking time will be reduced by one-third for a total time of two hours.


By eliminating 44 items, test takers will be given additional time to evaluate and respond to each question.

What's Changing?

Reading and English will have fewer questions. 


Students can now decide whether to take Science and/or writing sections. 


Shortened tests will enable faster score reporting.


Optional sections: Science & Writing. States and districts can choose to offer science and/or writing.


What's Remaining the Same?

English, reading, and math sections will still be required.


Scale remains the same (1-36) and the Composite Score.


Online or paper choice.
